MSG EPIDEMIC-Monosodium Glutamate Food Allergy Side Effects
What is MSG?
Monosodium glutamate stands for the abbreviation of MSG. It is used mainly in foods as a flavour enhancer, tenderizer, and as an addictive agent, which triggers senors in our body to want more of that acquired taste. Applied in canned goods, frozen foods, low-fat and fat-free products, diet foods, prepackaged food items, and hypo-allergenic baby foods.
Restaurants have found adding this to the food enhances the taste, thus making people wanting to visit often to satisfy their craving, therefore creating a habit or addiction, which in return heightens revenue and income!
This is a simplified version just to have people realize how money is blinding, and health and concern is at the bottom of this vicious chain. A pretty startling revelation of how corrupt humans can be against each other, when money, wealth, and greed play a high role.
Deception in "Labeling"
The FDA has put a restriction on the food industry to provide labeling of all used ingredients, thus declaring the use of MSG as a factor. The food industry hiding behind decception declares "No MSG", "No Flavor Enhancers" or "No added MSG". Yet they have adopted another method of hidding behind the truth of "Labeling" by subsituting MSG under borrowed names or other additives, such as hydrolyzed protien, yeast extract, soy protien, etc...... The list is quiet disturbing to say the least.

Monosodium glutamate is only one of several forms of free glutamate used in foods. Free glutamate can also be present in a wide variety of other additives, including hydrolyzed vegetable proteins, autolyzed yeast, hydrolyzed yeast, yeast extract, soy extracts, protein isolate, "spices" and "natural flavorings." The food additives disodium inosinate and disodium guanylate are usually used in synergy with monosodium glutamate-containing ingredients, and provide a likely indicator of the presence of monosodium glutamate in a product [6].
For this reason, FDA considers labels such as "No MSG" or "No Added MSG" to be misleading if the food contains ingredients that are sources of free glutamate, such as hydrolyzed protein.[6]
In 1993, FDA proposed adding the phrase "(contains glutamate)" to the common or usual names of certain protein hydrolysates that contain substantial amounts of glutamate.[6] For example, if the proposal were adopted, hydrolyzed soy protein would have to be declared on food labels as "hydrolyzed soy protein (contains glutamate)."
MSG Side Effects
What are some of the side effects that are associated with products having MSG or other adopted ingredients that are factors of MSG.
To list a few: swelling, hard breathing, tightening of chest, water retention, excessive eating, hunger, addiction, appetite inducer, killer (cancer), and the list can go on.....
Obesity plays a big role in this for the simple fact, MSG can act as an appetite inhibitor, to enhance the conscious or unconscious need to eat more, and supply the craving thus resulting in overweight! People are not obese by nature, yet many things could be causing this imbalance, thus resulting in obesity. Health issues can be a big factor. This problem needs to be isolated to what is the main problem, before moving any further. Unfortunately, doctors are unable to pin point this problem, because they are not focusing on MSG as a contributing factor, yet it is in many cases!
The Elderly and Children are sensitive targets that are most vulnerable.
The elderly are mostly effected, because their immunity is more susceptible. They are mostly consuming low fat or fat free foods with low salt in-take, but with flavor additives which will counter act with whatever medication they are prescribed. Thus reactions occur, where MSG additives depending on the concentration, might be the problem behind that reaction. Alzheimer's, arthritis, joint inflammation, water retention, headaches, migraines, diabetes, Cholesterol, blood pressure, and the list goes on.......
Children are easily harmed, because MSG is in most of the little "goodies" that kids love to eat. Potato chips, cool aid, low fat or fat free snacks, baby foods or formulas, candy, yogurt, and many more.
Depending on how many additives it has been enhanced with, the high concentration can be extremely hazardous to their small bodies, especially when children are still strengthening and developing their immunity system. Some reactions that has been associated with MSG are: autism, epilepsy, crohn's and colitis disease, cancer, headaches, induced Asama, cholesterol, obesity, uncontrolled eating habits, attention disorder dificit (ADD), and many more.....
Parents should be aware of what children are consuming. Natural fruits, nuts, vegetables, whole food snacks, and regular fat foods are probably healthier, as long as normal fat in take is controlled in moderation, with normal healthy exercise and activities!

Companies are continually updating, and changing names to disguise themselves from the eyes of the public. But just like banning cigarettes, anything can be accomplished with the support of the public. This is considered a hazard to our health and well being. This must be investigated by the FDA, with further action taken to insure public safety with heightened control to minimize the usage to extremely low percentages that are not harmful to humans. Unfortunately, I doubt that this can be STOPPED, but with the demand of the public, it can be put under extreme CONTROL!!!

What Is The Solution?
We can not stop these companies completely from adding MSG to products. We can petition the FDA to put specific guide lines of what percentage that is non-toxic to our bodies, especially for babies, children, and the elderly, that they would have to declare under direct scrutiny, and scientific proven facts to the FDA and public!
To think that these companies will totally remove this substance, we will be fooling ourselves of this accomplishment. Thus, at least work with these companies to reach a healthy and safe medium.

Thank you for this hub, there were a few 'bad incidents" in my family involving MSG. I will definitely check out that site that you included here.
I thank you Elynjo for your support. It is pretty sad to be subjected to such injustice by the food and drug industry. If we circulate this issue and bring more awareness to our public, we can force the Food & Drug industry to enforce stricter laws, and for all to comply, thus stopping the use of this silent killer (MSG)!!!

Great hub. I agree with you totally. I own a nutrition company and I know this information falls on deaf ears when we try to tell people. But the one thing people always say is "I get tired of reading labels and I can't remember all of this."
I am sure that is why they put it in all different things just to confuse people. And I feel so bad for the senior citizens ...how can they remember all of this.
Keep them coming ...We need to get the information out there how ever we can and as often as we can!!!
